South Pointe Park, with its decorative light masts and water jet shrouds, is a testament to the potential of design and engineering to elevate public spaces and enrich the lives of those who visit them.
South Pointe Park, located in Miami Beach, FL, USA, underwent a remarkable transformation as architects sought to enhance its charm and functionality. The aim was to introduce a unique lighting feature that would harmonize with the South Beach Art Deco district’s aesthetics while serving a practical purpose. This project exemplifies the collaborative efforts of architects and material experts, resulting in an innovative and visually striking addition to the park.
The Vision Behind South Pointe Park
South Pointe Park is a beloved waterfront destination known for its breathtaking views and recreational amenities. When the architects embarked on the journey of enhancing this iconic park, they aimed to create a unique lighting feature that would not only accentuate the park’s design but also offer a captivating visual experience for visitors.
The challenge was to illuminate the park’s waterfront trails in a way that aligned with the natural surroundings and architectural character of the area. The architects envisioned a design that would seamlessly blend with the park’s aesthetic while preserving the integrity of the environment, including sea turtle migration patterns.
A team of experts, with a deep understanding of materials and design, was entrusted with the task of creating a lighting feature that would stand out in South Pointe Park. The result? Eighteen oval-shaped light masts, each standing at an impressive 20 feet tall.
These light masts are not just ordinary fixtures; they are a testament to craftsmanship and innovation. They incorporate several key specifications that make them unique and functional:
- Vee-Wire® with 1-inch support rods and a 3/8-inch slot opening: This design not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of the light masts but also enhances their structural integrity.
- Debris screen on the inside of the bottom collar: This feature ensures that the light masts remain free from debris, enhancing their longevity and minimizing maintenance requirements.
- Continuous ladder louver with a conduit for lights: The ladder design not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also has a functional role in shielding the metal halide light at the top from shining out to the sea. This careful consideration helps protect sea turtle migration patterns, aligning with the park’s commitment to preserving the environment.
- Bolting flange on the bottom of the screen for easy installation: The ease of installation ensures that the project could be executed efficiently and with precision.
In addition to these elegant light masts, South Pointe Park features another captivating element – 32 conical ellipse-shaped water jet shrouds, each standing at an impressive 48 inches tall. These shrouds, constructed from 316L stainless steel, are not only visually striking but also serve a unique purpose. Fitted with bulkheads that allow for an even stream of water to jet out, these shrouds create an ever-changing experience for pedestrians as they walk through the park. The arched streams of water, gracefully cascading over the pathways, add an enchanting dimension to the park’s ambiance.
The lighting system of the 18 light masts is a harmonious blend of technology and nature. At the top of each mast, metal halide lighting provides a warm and inviting glow. At the bottom, energy-efficient LED lighting adds a touch of modernity. This dual-lighting approach ensures that the park remains well-lit while minimizing its impact on the environment.
